Report to Contributors

Dear Leo Buscaglia Foundation Friends:

This is the month of Thanksgiving, so we would like to start by describing three organizations that are thankful for your contributions. Each was awarded a grant at our autumn board meeting.

  • The Sanford Center for Aging at the University of Nevada - Nevada, Reno

The Sanford Center for Aging at the University of Nevada, Reno, has a Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) called ClownArounds. These volunteers become clowns and visit nursing home residents and hospitalized children in this fast-growing part of the country, bring smiles and relief from daily routines. Our check must have brought smiles to volunteer coordinator Linda Haigh, because she called to acknowledge the gift rather than wait to send a letter. We all benefit from smiles!

  • Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers - Fayetteville, Arkansas

Healey Tonsing, program coordinator for Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers in Fayetteville, Arkansas, called with her appreciation of our funding. IVC is a local program "encouraging the community to care for it's own" through home visits, shopping and repairs for those in need.

  • Junior-Senior Buddy Program at the King Street Youth Center - Burlington, Vermont

There were smiles from participants in the Junior-Senior Buddy Program at the King Street Youth Center in Burlington, Vermont as a result of our grant. Some adult volunteers cannot afford to take their junior buddies to admission-fee events, so rather than turn them away as participants, the Center has a Fund for Fun to help with such costs. Our gift will be used in this way. Director Roxane Leopold also called to say, "Thank you so much for this grant."

News of Previous Recipients

We have heard from several past grant recipients.

  • Cabrini Connections - Chicago, Illinois

Cabrini Connections, Chicago, listed their volunteers in their newsletter, ranging from those "just starting" to those who have been involved for 28 years in helping students with after-school programs.

  • RAVE Wave - Reno, Nevada

Megan Smithson, a RAVE Wave volunteer working with young special-needs children in Reno, Nevada, says, "The best thing about RAVE is working with the kids and when they come up and know your name and give you a hug!

  • Home Alive House - Fort Wayne, Indiana

Home Alive House, a support program for women in Fort Wayne, Indiana, had a "Three Days of Caring" event this summer to "spruce up the interior and grounds," giving volunteers a hands-on opportunity to be involved.

  • Casa Betsaida - Brooklyn, New York

Casa Betsaida, a recent grant recipient in Brooklyn that cares for people with AIDS, reports they reached their goal of "having thirty active and determined people enamored with the work done for these very needy persons. We feel proud of this, and have a profound gratitude for those institutions that helped us to make possible such a lovely group. You can be sure your name is in our hearts."

  • The Tutor/Mentor Connection - Portland, Maine

A very early Foundation grant was to C. Regina Kelley, a professor at the Maine College of Art in Portland, who was developing a community program called Art in Service. The Foundation Relations office of the college has just informed us that thanks to Ms Kelley's "leadership and initiative, Art in Service is now a permanent part of the student program." The current annual report for the college highlights Art in Service, now in it's tenth year. "A Memory for Tino", the Foundation's educational video on the joys of friendship, is now available from the web site of Great Plains National, who helped us get this resource into schools throughout the US. For more information, please write to gpn@unl.edu. "Tino" just received a "fan letter" from a private school counselor in North Carolina, who plans to use the video in three grades at her school in programs involving the elderly. She adds, "It is very rare to receive something free. I am so appreciative." (GPN does charge for shipping, but the video is provided by the Foundation.)

*Last time we reported that an effort was underway to raise production funds for a PBS special on Leo Buscaglia, who started this Foundation in 1984. In the meantime it has been determined that the Foundation's by-laws do not allow direct involvement in such a project, so the Board of Directors voted to withdraw support. This is not a comment on the idea of a tribute program, it is a technicality in our organizational structure. The many contributors who joined in this project have received letters with further explanations. We regret this misunderstanding.

We want to thank...

This is a time to be thankful, so in addition to thanking you for your support, we also want to thank others.

  • The Tahoe Tallac Association - South Lake Tahoe, Calilfornia

The Tahoe Tallac Association, South Lake Tahoe, Calilfornia, has helped us lately with our mailings. We are still small enough that an actual person folded this report, put it in the envelope, and added a stamp. That takes time, so we appreciate the help!

  • Star Poell - Lake Tahoe, Nevada

The Tallac Historic Site is the location of The Boathouse Theater that Leo Buscaglia was so instrumental in bringing to completion. Star Poell is a real estate agent on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. She asked to excerpt parts of our "Living Giving" card to distribute to customers. We appreciate the outreach. If you are not familiar with these cards, please request some.

  • Time Magazine

Time magazine had a cover story this summer on giving. Two statements there deserve repeating: "Our generosity may be the best measure of our humanity." "Everyone should feel the pleasure of giving to others. If they knew that, they would give, too." We thank you for giving to the Leo Buscaglia Foundation so that we may give to others across America.
