Report to Contributors

Dear Leo Buscaglia Foundation Friends:

Traditionally, spring is the season of rebirth, growth and change. It is with that in mind that this mailing will reflect some of the new developments at the Leo Buscaglia Foundation and how we are gradually evolving. We hope that you will agree that good things are happening.

Please note that the office has moved back to California and that we have new contact information. You will see our new mailing address, phone and FAX numbers, and Email address on the letterhead.

At our last meeting the Board adopted an official mission statement for the Foundation. Although our founder, Leo Buscaglia, had clearly expressed his intentions and vision for the Foundation, there was no single defining statement of our purpose. Below is our mission statement.

"To foster the spirit of giving in others by encouraging and nurturing organizations whose goal is to enhance the spirit of giving, caring and love within their community."

You will be pleased to know that the Board has awarded three new grants to organizations clearly matching our mission statement and grant requirements.

  • Channel 5 Public Broadcasting - Nevada

"High 5" Program in Nevada produces and broadcasts short 'between program' segments to celebrate and encourage volunteerism in the Reno/Tahoe region. Each slot highlights the good work of an individual and the nonprofit organization for which he/she volunteers. With Foundation funding, 12 to 18 new segments will be produced and then broadcast for one year, adding to the nine already being aired. As an extra benefit, the Foundation will be given on-screen funding credit.

  • Dreams for Kids - Chicago, Illinois

Dreams for Kids provide one-on-one contact with children with disabilities, most of whom come from economically disadvantaged homes. This group works directly with Chicago area children’s hospitals and rehabilitation centers where volunteers regularly visit, encourage and provide support for each child's individual needs. An example of how Dreams for Kids helps foster the spirit of giving involves one youngster who, after a severe spinal cord injury, was befriended by the organization's president. Following rehabilitation and college this young man returned to become a part of the Dreams for Kids team and now is involved with encouraging physically challenged young people himself.

  • The Los Angeles Youth Programs: Camp Kids Zone, Reach Our Community Project - Los Angeles, California

The Los Angeles Youth Programs: Camp Kids Zone, Reach Our Community Project is primarily an after-school program for an elementary school in a lower income section of the L. A. area. This program goes beyond mere help with homework by encouraging the interaction of children with and without disabilities who come from a variety of ethnic and economic backgrounds. This fosters a sense of citizenship and volunteerism among them. Along with a staff of qualified professionals, students from the local high school and area universities volunteer their services to the program. Some fifth grade students are currently involved in a program in which they are transported weekly to a nursing home where they are gradually building relationships with seniors through joint projects involving crafts, reading, performance and other activities.

News of Previous Recipients

We have also heard from some of the groups who have already benefited from our grants:

  • Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers - Fayetteville, Arkansas

Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers received a Foundation grant last year, thanked us in its February newsletter. It also reported on the success of a holiday project delivering baskets of food to the needy in the northwest portion of the state. It is hoped this will be the start of a tradition that not only sees to physical needs but offers emotional support with lots of smiles and love as well.

  • RSVP ClownArounds - Reno, Nevada

In the February 1st Reno News and Review there was an article regarding the RSVP ClownArounds and mention of the Leo Buscaglia Foundation as a source of funding. They received our grant last year to further their work visiting and entertaining children and the elderly in hospitals and seniors in nursing homes.

  • Hope Alive - Fort Wayne, Indiana

Hope Alive in Fort Wayne, Indiana reported in their winter newsletter that they are adding to their already extensive list of programs which provide assistance to women who are dealing with serious depression. This new support group will address the issue of how to cope with bipolar disorders.

  • The Tutor/Mentor Connection - Chicago, Illinois

The Tutor/Mentor Connection in Chicago, IL was awarded a Foundation grant last year for the work they do in after-school programs matching adults with struggling students from poor neighborhoods. In their February/March newsletter they report on their ongoing work recruiting volunteers and expanding their services throughout the greater Chicago area and beyond.

The above mentioned programs offer examples of the kinds of groups the Foundation favors for funding. Of course, many others may qualify as well. The primary component we always look for in any grant request application is how an organization' s work will somehow foster the spirit of giving in others. We are always on the lookout for worthy organizations that match our qualifications. If you know of any deserving group, we encourage you to either write us about them or have them contact us directly. We have enclosed a copy of our Application Requirements. Please look it over and give some thought to any deserving group that may benefit from our resources.

You will also notice that our stationery has an updated list of both the Board of Directors and Advisory Board members. We have had some recent changes, and we welcome the names of qualified individuals who might be interested in volunteering as a member of our Advisory Board or Board of Directors to support our mission and assist in growing the Foundation’s resources. If you have any suggestions of new members, please call Marilyn Simcox at 213-688-3323.

As we hurry through our complex day-to-day activities in such a large universe, it is easy to feel insignificant. Edward Everett Hale wrote something that would be good to keep in mind at such times: "I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do."

YOU can make a difference and you do make a difference each time you involve yourself in an act of selfless giving. On the back of this page is a list of all those who chose to make a difference last year by supporting the Leo Buscaglia Foundation with their gifts. If you have not done so already, we ask you to join with them. And if your name is listed there, we thank you and would be most grateful for your continuing support.
