Report to Contributors

Dear Leo Buscaglia Foundation Friends:

We are very grateful to you and others that have so generously participated in the mission of our organization. Our board continues to provide direction and guidance to fulfill our mission statement:

To foster the spirit of giving in others by encouraging and nurturing organizations whose goal is to enhance the spirit of giving, caring and love within their community.

The founder of the Leo Buscaglia Foundation, Leo Buscaglia, would be very proud of the work that has been carried on since his passing. My own term as chairman of our board began since our last correspondence to you and it is a privilege to be working with such an outstanding board and staff in this regard.

You will be pleased to know that we have awarded new grants to organizations that clearly match our mission statement and grant requirements. Those recipients include:

  • Fulfillment Fund (mentor program) - Los Angeles, California
    Amount Awarded: $15,000

The Fulfillment Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting educationally underserved and economically disadvantaged students in the Los Angeles area. Their goal is to help students realize their dreams of graduating from high school and matriculating to college. Students accepted into the Fulfillment Fund's mentor program are mentored for five years, receive academic support, college counseling and some receive a $5,000 scholarship for up to five years of undergraduate education. Students are required to "give back" by mentoring three students in the course of their lifetime.

  • ACE Golf Foundation - Grand Junction, Colorado
    Amount Awarded: $15,000

The ACE Golf Foundation teaches life lessons and values through the game of golf bringing together children, parents, seniors and business leaders. ACE stands for access, competition and etiquette. The organization provides access to the game of golf through free clinics for the underprivileged, a girl’s only sequence, a separate experience for troubled youth and for children with special needs.

  • Friends of Washington Prep Foundation - Los Angeles, California
    Amount Awarded: $25,000

This organization funds the "kids helping kids" program. This music-mentor program, utilizing members of the Washington Prep jazz band, gives weekly instruction to over 100 elementary and middle school students in playing instruments, music lessons and hands on workshops. The younger students go on to perform concerts at local retirement or convalescent homes. They are asked to perform at least two of these community concerts and must promise to try and help ten people in the future. When the grade school students enter high school they begin to teach the younger students. Graduating Washington Prep students return to teach the seniors in the jazz band. The seniors in turn teach the juniors and all work with the elementary and middle school students.

  • Call to Renewal - Springfield, Ohio
    Amount Awarded: $15,000

The Call to Renewal is a multi-cultural coalition of Clark County (Ohio) congregations seeking to mobilize churches to reduce poverty in Springfield and Clark County and to help secure the future of the community's youth. Their primary program is the "Springfield School of the Streets" program. This program benefits middle and high school students in Clark County by providing assistance and volunteer opportunities to urban youth in the areas of education and entertainment. The project seeks to enrich young people and by extension, the entire community by mentoring youth and showcasing the artistic handiwork of the young people of the Springfield and Clark County area.

  • The Angel Project - Arvada, Colorado
    Amount Awarded: $15,000

The Angel Project conducts one day workshops working with teenage mothers and mothers living in homeless shelters. The workshops teach a variety of basic life skills and covers topics such as shaken baby syndrome, the effects of drugs and alcohol on the unborn babies and how to identify and escape abusive relationships. These workshops are integrated into a one year program provided by a variety of local agencies. Activities of this organization include a mentoring program and a twelve week parenting class. The Angel Project also works with low-income mothers of all ages who have left an abusive relationship. Trained volunteers are available to monitor the children of these women while they are attending the workshops.

These recent recipients and those that have previously received grants from our organization all share a common attribute. All of these organizations foster and nurture the human spirit and emulate the care and thoughtfulness that Leo would genuinely appreciate. We would encourage you to make us aware of any other groups or recipients that you may feel are qualified to submit a grant proposal to us. We can provide you a copy of our application requirements or forward such application to the potential recipient you may identify.

You can appreciate that the level of giving has been affected over the past year due to tragic events within our country. There are many worthy recipients of genuinely needed contributions and we respectfully ask that you keep the Leo Buscaglia Foundation in your hearts and minds and continue to participate with us at whatever level is most appropriate. You can make a difference and you certainly do make a difference when you participate in an act of selfless giving.

Thank you for your previous support in the past. We are looking forward to your continued support of the organization.

Sincerely,

William R. Boyd, Jr.
