Report to Contributors

Dear Leo Buscaglia Foundation Friends:

Because of your continued support and thoughtfulness we were able to make the following donations to these very worthy causes at the conclusion of 2002. We are beginning this second quarter of 2003 with even higher expectations that your generosity can be counted upon in addition to our board’s efforts in securing additional and increased contributions to our foundation.

You will be pleased to know that we have awarded the following grants to these organizations that clearly match our mission statement and grant requirements. Those recipients include:

  • King Street Youth Center - Burlington, Vermont
    Amount Awarded: $5,000

The King Street Youth Center (KSYC) was established in 1971 and serves over 500 at-risk youth in the Burlington, Vermont area. They are seeking funding for their Junior-Senior Buddy Program (JSBP).

The JSBP was started in 1984 and matches adults with children ages 5-11 in a one-on-one mentoring program. The "Senior Buddies" spend 2-4 hours per week for a minimum one-year commitment with their "Junior Buddies".

Due to the success of the JSBP the community has asked KSYC to expand their base and increase the number of youths paired up with buddies. They are requesting $5,000 from the Leo Buscaglia Foundation to assist with this expansion. The funds will be used for a portion of the Volunteer Coordinator’s salary, monthly mentor support meetings and their 'cache of cash' that is used to purchase tickets to the theater, sporting events, movies, the circus, or outdoor seasonal events.

  • A Place Called Home - Los Angeles, California
    Amount Awarded: $15,000

A Place Called Home (APCH) provides at risk youth in South Central Los Angeles (ages 9-20) with a secure, positive environment where they can regain hope and belief, earn trust and self-respect and learn skills needed to lead a productive life free of the gangs, drugs and poverty that surround them. APCH is seeking a grant to help fund their Creative Expression Program.

The Creative Expression Program offers training, performance and exhibition opportunities in the areas of dance, music and fine arts. Participants in the program 'give back' via performance and by senior students helping the beginners. Many of the current students have expressed a desire to return and help with the program in the future. Of the entire APCH staff, 40% were former youth participants.

APCH is seeking a grant in the amount of $10,000 to fund expenses for the Creative Expression Program. These expenses include supplies, musical instruments, intern stipends and scholarships for students in the advanced dance program.

  • The Heartfelt Foundation - Santa Monica, California
    Amount Awarded: $10,000

The Heartfelt Foundation was established in 1979. It serves primarily the Los Angeles area but has worked throughout the country and the world. The foundation is seeking $15,000 in funding for two of their newer programs, the Adopt-A-Family Project and the HeartReach Service Project.

The Adopt-A-Family Project matches in-need and at-risk families (adoptees) with individuals, families, groups or businesses (adopters) for a six to twelve month period. The adopters provide support and supplemental resources to fulfill some of the adopters unmet needs. These include dental or medical visits for the children, groceries, clothing, jobs, financial support or whatever the most immediate need may be.

The HeartReach Service Project was established in 1997. It is an organized system of people helping people on an individual basis. Volunteers help those in need in a variety of ways including delivering food and medicine, sitting with them in the hospital, running errands, taking them shopping or to the doctors and more. The Heartfelt Foundation assists with the costs of food, medicine and medical care. The HeartReach program is valuable for people that prefer to help others on a one-on-one basis rather than with a group or by serving a large group of people in need.

The Heartfelt Foundation is requesting funds for both the Adopt-A-Parent and HeartReach programs. Funds will be used for volunteer coordination and recruitment, transportation and supplies.

These recent recipients and those that have previously received grants from our organization all share a common attribute. All of these organizations foster and nurture the human spirit and emulate the care and thoughtfulness that Leo Buscaglia would genuinely appreciate. We would encourage you to make us aware of any other groups or recipients that you may feel are qualified to submit a grant proposal to us. We can provide you a copy of our application requirements or forward such application to the potential recipient you may identify.

Thank you for your previous support in the past. We are looking forward to your continued support of the organization.

Sincerely,

William R. Boyd, Jr.
